Understanding the Zones (A, B, C, D)
Helsinki is divided into lettered zones. Most jobs are in Zone A and B. If you live in Helsinki and work in Vantaa, you need an AB Ticket.
Buying Tickets
Do not try to pay with cash on a bus—it is not possible. You have two main options:
- The App: Download the HSL app, link your bank card, and buy tickets instantly.
- HSL Card: A physical blue card you can “load” with money at R-Kioski.
Penalty Warning: Always have a valid ticket. Ticket inspectors in Helsinki are common, and the fine for traveling without a ticket is €80 plus the price of the ticket.

If you work full-time, always buy a 30-day Season Ticket. It is significantly cheaper than buying single tickets every day.
