Cheap Groceries in Helsinki

Food can be expensive in Finland, but if you know where to shop, you can keep your monthly food bill under €300 while working a physical job.

Where to Shop

  • Lidl: Generally the cheapest for milk, eggs, bread, and frozen meat.
  • S-Market / Prisma: Great variety and very fair prices. Look for the “Rainbow” or “X-tra” brands—these are the cheapest options.
  • K-Market: Avoid these for your big weekly shop! They are convenient but much more expensive.
The “Red Sticker” Secret: After 9:00 PM (21:00), many S-Markets double the discount on items with red stickers. A 30% off sticker becomes 60% off! This is the best way to buy meat and ready-meals.

The “Pantti” System (Bottle Deposits)

Never throw away your plastic bottles or cans. Every bottle has a value (usually 0.15€ to 0.40€). Take them back to the machine at the grocery store entrance to get a voucher for free groceries.

By shopping at Lidl and using the “Red Sticker” strategy, a warehouse worker can easily save enough money to cover their monthly HSL transport pass.
